Abstract: Brief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This book examines the ways traditional Konso values gave
coherence to their social institutions and religious rituals. Emphasis on the values of
communal life and masculinity led to the continuity of a unique settlement pattern
consisting of compact, stone walled towns situated atop extensively terraced hills. In each
town, one finds not just individual homesteads and wards, but also well cared for communal
ritual spaces and men’s houses, together with clusters of standing stones and
anthropomorphic wooden grave figures commemorating battles and hometown
veterans.
