Abstract
This document traces the history of Zimbabwe protest songs sung in the Shona language. It identifies six protest song cycles that broadly coincide with important political periods in Zimbabwe's history since the advent of British colonialism in 1890. It is argued that each period influenced the structure of protest songs, and that the songs served as a barometer in the mobilization of political support.
