Abstract
The author demonstrates the versatility of cattle as mediums of exchange in this analysis grounded in the key factors of production needed by individuals establishing households and aspiring to improve their social standing. Any ambitious Ila needs cattle for marrying a wife, feeding the household, earning social respect, appeasing dead ancestors and spirits, etc. Cattle also can be loaned to relatives and friends for anticipated material and social gains.
