Abstract
This is a general study of the Azande economy as it existed in the 1950s. The author describes various types of Azande markets, the variety of goods in circulation, merchants and peddlers, domestic and foreign trade, the use of money in exchange transactions, cotton marketing, and labor as a means of obtaining cash income in the society. The author notes that in pre-European times the Azande probably did not have established markets per se but exchanged goods between households. Under colonial administration, however, markets became a regular feature of Azande life.
