Migration across ecosystem boundaries

Abstract
This article focuses on long-term migration out of the pastoral sector for one year or more in Southern Turkana. It also discusses the effects of both short-term and long-term migration across the boundaries of the Turkana pastoral production system on ecosystem function. Findings of the study show that Turkana out-migrants do not ultimately return to the pastoral sector, and many do not maintain contact with their natal families. Other regions of Kenya appear to be a 'sink' for surplus population in Turkana, rather than a source of economic support for the pastoralists.
