Ecology and social structure among the North eastern Ibo

Africa31 • Published In 1961 • Pages: 117-134

By: Jones, Gwilym Iwan.

Abstract
Jones proposes that the distinctive features of the Northeastern Igbo social structure are a modification of the more typical Igbo structure. Further, he posits that this modification is in response to new environmental conditions. He compares the respective agricultural systems, patterns of territorial expansion and supporting mythological charters, and residential and land tenure systems. Jones illustrates how the aforementioned patterns, representing distinctive Northeastern Igbo forms, were reflected in their marriage and kinship relations, as well as their political organization.
