The Fanti family system

Journal of the African Society7 • Published In 1908 • Pages: 394-409

By: Ffoulkes, Arthur.

Abstract
Fanti family and kin groupings and relationships are analyzed by Arthur Ffoulkes, formerly British District Commissioner of the Gold Coast Colony. Ffoulkes' classification of kin groupings is at variance with the system used by HRAF, and it should be pointed out that his term ‘sept’ corresponds to the sib (category 614), while his use of the general term ‘family’ is applicable to both the extended family (category 596) and the lineage (category 613). The several types of slavery prevalent among the Fanti are discussed and data are also provided on the geographical distribution and the various totems of the seven principal Gold Coast sibs.
