Abstract: Brief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This article, which was first published in Dutch as a
section in a larger collection entitled 'Bali: Studies in Life, Thought and Ritual',
describes the social position of blacksmiths in Balinese society. It shows as of the 1920s,
the Balinese considered all metal as magically dangerous. Blacksmiths were considered
magicians because of their daily contact with such a magically charged
substance.
