The heirarchy of resort in curative practices: the Admiralty Islands, Melanesia

Journal of health and social behavior10 (3) • Published In 1969 • Pages: 201-209

By: Romanucci-Ross, Lola.

Abstract
Romanucci-Ross examines the kinds of medical treatment used by the Manus based on case studies collected by several anthropologists, including the author between 1928 and 1967. She found that in spite of the Manus desire for 'total acculturation,' they continue to practice 'counter-acculturative' medical practices. Romanucci-Ross identifies a 'hierarchy of resort' to medical treatment that Manus seek, ranging from modern clinical medicine, Christian prayer and hymn singing, to traditional curing (not necessarily in this order.) The Manus associate specific illnesses with specific kinds of treatment, whether traditional or European. They seek traditional cures for the gravest illnesses.
