Economic development in Tabanan

Peddlers and princes: social change and economic modernization in two Indonesian townsChicago • Published In 1963 • Pages: 82-141

By: Geertz, Clifford.

Abstract
This document is one long chapter extracted from a book in which Clifford Geertz contrasts socioeconomic change in the Indonesian towns of Modjokuto (in Java) and Tabanan (Bali). The document discusses how former aristocrats in Tabanan thrived to bring fundamental economic change not through commerce or investment as local enterprenuers did in Modjokutu and elsewhere, but mostly by mobilizing Balinese cultural sentiments of loyalty, respect, obligation and trust.
