Abstract: Brief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This article argues that Konso agriculture constitutes a
unique set of land use and labor exchange practices well-suited to the area’s mountainous
terrain, water scarcity and depleted soils. Included are descriptions of the construction
of erosion-protecting stone terraces following the contours of hillsides, conservation of
rainwater with wells and reservoirs, applications of manure, and mixed cultivation of a
wide variety of cereal, root and tree crops.
