This work is composed of a series of previously unpublished
notes, collected by Cerulli during his field work among the Somali in the period 1919-1926,
and deal, in varying degree and intensity of treatment, with several aspects of Somali
ethnology. These notes cover the following: names for the divinity, beliefs and traditions
about the serpent, lion, sparrow and trees, prohibited and non-prohibited foods,
lycanthropy, rites of exorcism, rites at childbirth, ceremonies for the Somali New Year,
astrological beliefs, the history and development of the SEH FARAG religious movement, the
confraternities or GEMA 'A (including information on their territory, festivals, and
educational facilities), and a list of the Somali names of the months.
