Abstract
This article consists of a culture summary made by Murdock, a professional anthropologist, from published and unpublished materials read and analyzed by him. It follows a standard organization as follows: A. Basic Economy: 1) agriculture, animal husbandry, hunting, gathering, fishing, trade; 2) division of labor by sex in the above activities. B. Property: 1) major forms of wealth and types of ownership; 2) rules governing inheritance; 3) slavery and class stratification. C. Marriage and the Family: 1) mode of marriage; 2) form of marriage; 3) form of family organization. D. Residence: 1) rule of residence, especially in marriage; 2) prevalence of local exogamy or endogamy. E. Consanguineal Kin Groups and Exogamy: 1) bilateral kin groups and cousin marriage; 2) rule of descent and unilinear kin groups. F. Kinship Terminology: 1) for primary relatives; 2) for secondary relatives; 3) for tertiary relatives, especially first cousins. G. Community Organization: 1) settlement pattern and house form; 2) social composition of the community; 3) local political organization; 4) political organization above the community level; 5) warfare, head-hunting, and cannibalism; 6) age-grades, initiation, genital mutilations, and secret societies. H. Sources: 1) bibliographical references consulted; 2) other sources. I. Identification: 1) the society or societies covered, with synonymy, population data, linguistic affiliations, historical information, etc.
