Abstract
This major ethnography focuses on the institution of the cattle-tending group, which also serves as the basic sociopolitical unit above the household. While most members of a cattle-tending group belong to one lineage, outsiders can join as long as they follow its norms and regulations. The groups play a role in the main agricultural ceremonies and festivals, marked by dancing and wrestling. Preliminary to the festivals, young men partake in so-called milk cures to gain weight.
