Abstract
This is a study of the social organization of the village of Kuapara in Birbhum District, West Bengal, India, where the author did intermittent field work in 1958-1961 (10.5 months). The gathered field data were then combined with comparative information from other published works to produce this document. In this work Kochar provides a basic description ofthe essential elements of Santal social structure (e.g., in reference to tribe, clan, sub-clan, village community, and traditional village officials), and then continues with more detailed information on the interrelationship between clan and sub-clan, lineage organization, the developmental cycle in the family, the articulation of the family with the lineage, and kinship terminology.
