Abstract
This is a thoroughly ethnographical description of the Santals, discussing their history and relationship to the surrounding Hindu population, social organization, life cycle, and religion; the economy is treated in a more generalized way. The impact of the Christian (Protestant) missions is described from its beginning in the middle of the 19th century. The author had spent eleven years as missionary amongst the Santal. His book is generally free from ideological prejudices.
