Abstract
This article describes the case of the Kol people working as bonded laborers in the stone quarries and silica sand mines near Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. The authors analyze the various conditions and factors which have been responsible for keeping the workers in this bonded condition for many generations. The paper details and discusses the social intervention made by Singh and Tripathi which they hoped would ensure sustainable freedom for these bonded laborers. Details of this intervention are described in the text to great length.
