Abstract
This dissertation is a precise ethnographic description of Tlingit culture and society, with a focus on economics and social institutions. Specific attention is given to the potlatch. Oberg distinguishes sharply between the purely economic exchange of goods which takes place between distant groups of Tlingit as well as other tribes (Tshimshian, Haida, inland Athapaskans) and the ceremonial gift exchange in the form of the potlatch which takes place between different clan groups of a certain area. According to the author excessive amounts of goods used for exchange and destruction in potlatches were a phenomenon caused by the influx of wealth resulting from the fur trade.
