Abstract: Brief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document This selection is taken from the first known work on the French in the Antilles, written by a missionary who spent three months in the islands. As a summary of impressions of the Carib in the year 1637, it presents very brief chapters on religion, clothing, occupations, commerce or relations with Europeans, eating and drinking, warfare, and lore and learning. Although the information is not unusual compared to that of other early writers, it is perhaps of special value in representing the earliest knowledge of the Caribs.
