This article presents the author's description and analysis
of Nuer rules of exogamy and incest, their relationship to each other and to Nuer social
structure. The incest taboos are functions of the rules of exogamy, not of notions of
consanguinity; the rules of exogamy differentiate among persons in Nuer society, indicate
kinship status, and keep clear other structurally important relationships within and
between communities.
