Abstract: Brief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This summary article is concerned mainly with the
distribution of the tribes which comprise the Leagues of eastern Inner Mongolia and the
AIMAKS of Outer Mongolia. In some cases the author includes population estimates and brief
descriptions of the distinguishing characteristics of the tribes. This survey is preceded
by discussions of the manner in which tribal organization centers around the hereditary
chief, and the way in which these tribes have been organized into larger territorial units.
Mr. Lattimore traces the history and role of Lamaism in Mongolia and describes the
ecclesiastical organization. A short summary of the history of Mongolia covers the period
from 1162 to the present.
