Abstract
This is an early English translation of Acuña's description of his journey down the Amazon River in 1639. Acuña was a Jesuit priest attached to the Jesuit College at Cuence, Peru, who was ordered to accompany the Portuguese General Texeira on his exploratory journey of the Amazon. Acuña was expressly ordered to observe and note the geography of the regipon and the various peoples encountered in order to prepare an accurate description of the Amazon region for the King of Spain. The cultural descriptions presented are generally very good; although Acuña was very naive in crediting native accounts of other groups, he displays little of the extreme bias so common in the reports of most European travelers of this period. Only the section describing an enclave of Tupinamba found on an island in the Amazon has been processed for the files.
