Abstract
Although Mormons in general placed a high value on education, frontier conditions challenged efforts to realize a formal education system. The agrarian schedule competed for students' time. Most schools were started and run by women. Educational opportunities among pioneers ranged from home schooling and classes housed in tents to Brigham Young's private school. Topics covered include early schooling, physical facilities, curriculum, and pedagogical tools.
