Abstract
In this paper, the author examines the relative status of women in terms of various indicators culled from government statistics, including literacy, school enrollment, and employment rates, and female child mortality. The author finds an unequal access to education and employment based on gender. A nine percent excess female infant mortality rate, prompted the author to carry out his own survey of food distribution practices in a sample of Shiraz households. He found that men are fed first and larger portions of the best food. Although this practice is moderated if the mother has an outside income, is more educated, and has fewer than five children.
