Abstract
The Garo had markets since the Mughal rule, mostly situated in border areas. Under British rule, roads were built and markets opened up in the interior. During the colonial period, exchanges based on barter gradually changed to those based on money. This change had profound social consequences, including the demise of the corporate household. Garo mostly sell agricultural crops and buy consumer goods. The terms of trade goes against Garo producers.
