Marriage and the classificatory system of relationships

Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britian and Ireland60 • Published In 1930 • Pages: 235-268

By: Firth, Raymond.

Abstract
This article is a discussion of the modifications of kinship terms and kin relationships consequent to 'anomalous' marriages in Tikopia. 'Anomalous' marriages are those unions of classificatory kin whose marriageability with regard to each other is limited. Firth describes the social reactions to such marriages and analyzes the changes in kinship terminological usage and in behavior among relatives who come into new alignments with these unions.
