Abstract
This classic work on Kanak mentality describes it as "mythic". The many dimensions of this mentality include its relationship to the body, emotions, space, time, language, names, kinship, chieftainship, ancestor worship, and totemism. The process of "individuation" that ensues in response to the colonial encounter and missionizing work is also discussed.
