Abstract
The community of Orderville attempted to reconcile Mormon communalism with capitalism by trying to realize full employment and equality while stimulating production and profit. The social experiment lasted for over ten years but eventually ended in transformation to a more individualistic community typical of the broader society. The author examines social order, settlement pattern, economic organization, subsistence and economic self-sufficiency, distribution of income, management, changes in wage and property systems which eventually led to the end of communalism, and finally the auctioning of communal property to the individual members.
