Abstract
This work examines changes and continuities in marriage practices from before and after resettlement of Egyptian Nubians in government-planned villages when their lands were submerged by the raising of the Aswan Dam in 1933. The focus is on ceremonies and organized rituals in the weeks leading up to and following the wedding day, based on informant accounts of previous practices and on observance of events during fieldwork. The results show reduced enforcement of the proscription on cousin marriage and of post-wedding seclusion, and in the performance sacrificial rites. Other notable changes include an increased secularization of nuptial ceremonies and a decline in the role of kin groups in organizing festivities.
