Abstract
This book '...attempts to describe, firstly, how Buddhism, in a late and strange form, came to Tibet and was there developed to suit the needs of an exceptional country and people; and, secondly, how for several centuries and down to the present day, it dominates the Tibetan nation. About three-fourths of the material set out in these pages is new: i.e., valuable books and manuscripts given...[the author] by the Dalai Lama, the Pan-chen Rim-po-che (Ta-shi Lama), and others, as well as conversations with leading Tibetans in Lhasa and elsewhere.' Material may be found here on the history of religion in Tibet from the early Ponism to Buddhism, the lives and teachings of various teachers and prophets, and the position of the priests in Tibetan society and in the government of the country. The book concludes with information on the Dalai Lama and with a list of the sources used in this work.
