Abstract
This French language article covers Songhai familial relationships, including brother-sister, paternal uncle-nephew, maternal uncle-nephew, parent-child, spousal, cousin, and grandparent-grandchild. It discusses the relative status, distance, authority, and familiarity (joking) found in each pair. For example, the close relationship between brother and sister carries over to adulthood, and extends to the responsibilities and roles they have for their nieces and nephews, even though they are from separate lineages. Additionally, the roles family members play in life-cycle events are examined.
