  abstract = 	{This source ``proposes to account for the character of authority exercized in'' the sub-district office ``by considering its relations to the social structure, and in particular the system of social stratification of the middle-sized community in Java in which it is located''.  The author collected his data through participant observation, informal interviewing, and archival research in Modjokuto as a member of the Harvard Indonesian project.  While the dissertation does include some general descriptive materials on Modjokuto and on Indonesian government and social stratification in general, most of the work centers on authority relationships involving members of the sub-district office located in Modjokuto.  Some pages have been retyped by HRAF because of the illegibility of the originals.  The reproduction quality of the copy used is generally poor.},
