More specifically the study examines the extent to which the Dogon stick to their preferential choice of cross-cousin marriage. The authors examine four cohorts: those born before 1905, between 1905-1925 and 1926-1946, and those born after 1947. They identify the genealogical and demographic structure of the population as the single most significant factor influencing marriage choice and not specific marriage rules, or economic factors.
