The most important of these problems is the emergence of a politically dominant ethnic Burmese group that systematically marginalized minority ethnic groups following Burma's independence in 1948. Focusing on the experiences of his own ethnic group the Kachin, the author discusses the many dimensions of this problem including the Burmese government's decision to transfer many Kachin-inhabited communities to China, and the political persecution and exclusion of Kachin leaders.
