Their text, supplemented with many photographs, conveys some of the feel of contemporary nomadic pastoral way of life. The authors also discuss the effects of decollectivization/privatization reforms. The response of herders was not to dissolve the communal ownership of the collectives (NEGDEL) entirely, but to incorporate themselves as a joint shareholding corporation, thus preserving some form of collective responsibility, albeit with households maintaining some private stock on the side. The herders also formed their own trading company to find and open markets in cities and across the borders in Russia and China.
