Add Cultures

Culture names can be selected from a list of OWC terms in order to restrict your search to specific cultures of interest. You may combine your Add Cultures selections with Subjects or Keywords in the Advanced Search form. Using only the Add Cultures function and leaving the rest of the search form blank will only retrieve abstracts of documents as would otherwise be found on Publication Information pages.

Enter the eHRAF World Cultures interface and find the navigation bar at the top of the page.

  1. Click on .
  2. Locate the Add Cultures box on the left-hand side of the page.

Note that this will read "Add Traditions" for eHRAF Archaeology.
  3. Click on to browse for and select one or more cultures to add to you search. Alternatively, you can click the "Add All" button to select all cultures; or, if you plan on also adding subjects and keywords to your search, leave this form untouched to search all cultures by default.
  4. When you click on , a smaller window will pop up. Browse the list of cultures using either the A-Z index, By Region or By Country buttons.

Feel free to visit Browse Cultures to familiarize yourself with the menu structure and the cultures available in eHRAF before constructing an Advanced Search.
  5. Click inside the check boxes to mark the cultures you wish to add to your search. Choosing a top level category, such as a country name in the By Country view, will enable you to select all cultures from that region at once.
Note that alphanumeric OWC identifiers are always displayed beside culture names throughout eHRAF. Click on any OWC identifier to open a pop-up window with further information about that culture.
  6. When you are done selecting cultures, click the Add Cultures button to close the pop-up window, or click Cancel to return to the Advanced Search form without adding any cultures.
  7. After you have chosen your cultures, the Add Cultures box will display the culture names and corresponding OWC identifiers as well as display a count of how many cultures you have chosen in total. It will also remember the names and show the list any time you return to Advanced Search during a single eHRAF session.
  8. If you would like to adjust your selection, simply uncheck the unwanted entries. You can also Clear All or Select All using the links provided.
  9. Once you are satisfied with your selection of cultures, you may choose to proceed by:
    • Adding Subjects
    • Adding Keywords
    • Adding an additional search form, if necessary
    • Executing your search
