Abstract
This article addresses a wide array of topics related to the economic organization of the Warao and its change over time. These include a history of contacts with criollos and missionaries, a brief description of the traditional Warao economy, and the introduction of wage labor and concomitant effects on the traditional patterns. Particularly noted are the roles of criollo middlemen and government programs in shaping the direction of Warao economic activity. The author is particularly concerned with understanding how to circumvent the middlemen exploiting the Warao.
