Abstract
This source is a musical analysis of curing songs of the Warao Indians. It contains information on the cultural and musical background of the Warao; the shaman's rattle, the HEBU-MATARO; a chapter each on the music of the different types of shamans, i.e., the WISIRATU, the BAHANAROTU, and the HOAROTU (including information on the HOAROTU as a witch); and, finally, information on HOA curing songs, which, according to the author, are not truly shamanic. The appendixes (comprising Volume II) containing the texts and musical transcriptions of the songs are not included.
