Abstract
This thesis is 'a demonstration of the interaction of physical environment and social organization and their influence upon the gene pool of the Warao' (p. viii). The first chapters cover the environment and life mode of the Warao, with special attention to how the demands of the environment and the Warao subsistence strategies relate tot the social organization. Excellent data are provided on the size, composition, and placement of the primary Warao social units, the household and village. The author then examines how the form of the social organization affects the Warao gene pool by statistically describing a series of genetic traits and analyzing variation among village means.
