Abstract
This document investigates the population dynamics of a group of Yanoama Indians living in northern Brazil from the time of first permanent contact with them in 1958 to 1987. In the analysis of the data the authors use the methods of …'quantitative demography and qualitative ethnography' (p. xiii). The material is organized into four parts. Part one presents background information on the Micajai Yanoama, population dynamics in the precontact period, and a general overview of the 28-year post contact period. Part two presents an analysis of demographic variables. With the individual demographic variables defined, part three presents a synthesis of the data and describes the interaction of these variables with each other. Part four concludes the analysis by comparing the results with other Yanoama groups, thus allowing the extrapolation of the Mucajai material to the wider Yanoama area (p. xiv).
