Abstract
The author served as volunteer associate with the Marquesas party of the Bayard Dominick Expedition of 1920-21. This study is based upon her collection of tattooing designs found among the natives while with the expedition and supplemented by information gleaned from existing literary sources. The social significance of tattooing, the method of execution, the classification of typical designs, and the stylistic differences between the southeastern and northwestern island groups are discussed in detail.
