Abstract
This is the introduction to a report on a three-year study carried out in the Hawaiian community of Nanakuli, thirty miles from Honolulu, and other communities on Oahu's Leeward Coast (see documents nos. 17-27.) The focus of the study was to identify aspects of Hawaiian way of life that interfere with Hawaiian participation and performance in the larger public culture, including the health, education, and welfare systems.
