South Seas in transition; a study of post-war rehabilitation and reconstruction in three British Pacific dependenciesSydney • Published In 1953 • Pages: xii-xiii, 259-367

Abstract
This document is the third part of a volume on the post-war situation in Papua-New Guinea, Fiji, and Western Samoa. Its purpose is to survey the post-war reconstruction which has taken place in Western Samoa. The text was originally written in 1947 and expanded to include events to 1950. This document deals with the contemporary political scene in Western Samoa, and the efforts of the Samoans to achieve self-government, against the background of traditional Samoan culture. The author has included sections on the socio-economic background, the New Zealand administrative system, the contemporary Samoan community, the Samoan ethos and modal personality, the Samoan adjustment to World War II and its aftermath, the demographic situation in Samoa, and the movement for self-government. The author makes frequent reference to the work of other anthropologist in Samoa and occasionally, especially in his chapter on ethos, introduces data which challenge extreme interpretations of Samoan culture and personality. Stanner has performed the valuable service of integrating material on Samoan social structure and summarizing salient factors in changing contemporary Samoa.
