Abstract
This article examines two important Chuukese relationships which involve direct sexual expression in the society, that of the marital 'spouse relationship,' viewed by the natives as less satisfactory for the purposes of sexual gratification than that of the extra or pre-marital 'sweetheart' relationship.' Both of the above relationships are thoroughly discussed especially in the light of their respective functions in the society as mechanisms of psychological adjustment to conflicts and emotional stress inherent in Chuukese culture. Additional data are also given on divorce, brother-in-law and father-in-law relations, sexual techniques, and legal norms relating to the regulating of the 'sweetheart relationships.'
