Let's go fishing

kiribati: a changing atoll culture[Suva, Fiji] • Published In 1985 • Pages: 141-153

By: Onorio, Barerei.

Abstract
This document covers the social and technical organization of fishing and associated marine hunting activities in Kiribati. Underscoring fishing as an integral aspect of Kiribati culture, the author laments how the sector is underperforming for a host of reasons. The most important is the traditional attitude toward fishing as a leisure pursuit rather than as economically gainful work. When fishermen say "let’s go fishing" they mean let’s go have a good time together, which has had the long-term effect of perpetuating inefficient technologies and labor wastage. For maps, glossary, and bibliographysee Mason (1985).
