The economic impact of tourism in Kiribati

Pacific studies14 (2) • Published In 1991 • Pages: 53-70

By: Milne, Simon.

Abstract
This document evaluates the income generating and job creation roles of tourism in the Kiribati. It is argued that while tourism may bring increased income for resource-poor island communities, it also brings economic costs. Evidence of such costs included growing income inequality and increasing dependence on imported products and foreign workers. The study also raises concerns about tourism’s environmental and cultural consequences.
