Abstract
This article presents an in-depth analysis of '…the distinction between ontogenetic and phylogenetic dimensions in Kiriwinan kinship and marriage, proposed as an alternative to the 'initial situation/primary meaning and extension' theories postulated in varying forms by Malinowski, Lounsbury, and Leach' (p. 198). The general nature of Kiriwinian kinship is examined in this study, followed by discussions on the existing theories of Kiriwinian kinship and marriage, the elementary family, the sub-clan hamlet, domicile and residence patterns, adoption, a re-evaluation of the term TABU (loosely used as a class of kin), and marriage preferences
