Abstract
This is an analysis of the Vakutan mortuary cycle. These data on Vakuta Island are compared to similar mortuary customs and practices on Kiriwina Island as observed by Annette Weiner during her work on the island in 1971-1972 (see 25: Weiner, this file), and with that reported by Montague on Kaileuna Island in 1971 (see source 34: Montague). Although there are many similarities in the compared data, there were some distinct differences ranging from technical divergences and terminological variations to differences in the focus of specific stages of the mortuary cycle.
