Abstract
This brief article consists of a typescript handed to Murray Groves, an Oxford anthropologist, in Port Moresby in 1955 by Watson, who was a native Trobriand Islander. The manuscript consists of a ranking of the kinds of chiefs, with their titles, a short discussion of their 'decorations,' and a statement of the reason why chiefs are polygynous.
