Abstract
This source describes a government project initiated in 1964 in the Northern District of Papua, in which land previously held by the Orokaiva under customary tenure was converted to registered individual title. The author examines the motivation and expectations of the people at one of the first conversion scheme sites, Ombi-Tara, and explores the effects of conversion on Ombi-Tara agricultural productivity, land use, settlement patterns, work organization, and social life.
